Prestress Loss of CFL in a Prestressing Process for Strengthening RC Beams

Abstract: A prestressing system was designed to strengthen reinforced concrete (RC) beams with prestressed carbon fiber laminate (CFL). During different prestressing processes, prestress loss was measured using strain gauges attached on the surface of CFL along the length direction. The prestress loss was 50–68% of the whole prestress loss, which is typically associated with CFL slipping between the grip anchors. Approximately 20–27% of the prestress loss was caused by the elastic shortening of the RC beam. An analytica… Show more

“…Parameters k 1 , k 2 , k 3 , and k 4 in Figure 1 were chosen as 8.63, 70.5, 1.425, and 72.1, respectively. In this study, the RC beams were strengthened with carbon fiber laminate (CFL) [31] composed of unidirectional carbon fiber silk and epoxide resin for the specimens. Therefore, CFL has the advantages of both carbon fiber plates and sheets.…”

“…The tensile prestress and bonding procedures of the CFL can be subdivided into four processes: tensioning, bonding, curing, and releasing. We developed the prestressing system for stretching CFL and reinforcing RC beams, the details and processes of which are shown in Figure 6 and are specifically described in the reference [31].…”

“…The analysis of the mean stress effect plays an important role when estimating the fatigue life of materials due to the fact that it can be considered as an extra static load added to the system. This can be also analyzed as an effect of prestressing the composite material, which is analyzed with the crack propagation approach by many scientists like Park et al [1] or Guo et al [2]. However, up to now, it was usually considered for isotropic materials, and rarely was discussed in terms of durability up to the crack initiation stage.…”

“…To overcome these disadvantages, researchers have focused on the local measurement that place the sensor on the surface of the strand to directly monitor prestresses at some pre-designated points. The local measurement is applied based on some electric sensors, such as strain gauges [15,16], piezoelectric transducer actuator [17] and so on. However, local measurement is more challenging to perform than global measurement due to the following three reasons.…”
