Presupposing acquaintance: a unified semantics for de dicto, de re and de se belief reports

Abstract: This paper deals with the semantics of de dicto, de re and de se belief reports. First, I flesh out in some detail the established, classical theories that assume syntactic distinctions between all three types of reports. I then propose a new, unified analysis, based on two ideas discarded by the classical theory. These are: (i) modeling the de re/de dicto distinction as a difference in scope, and (ii) analyzing de se as merely a special case of relational de re attitudes. The resurrection of these ideas takes… Show more

“…Although I need to abstain from detailed discussion of such sentences in this paper, I would like to mention that recent studies such as Cable (2005), Spathas (2010), Jacobson (2012), Sauerland (2013), and Sudo (2012) demonstrate that these sentences are amenable to alternative accounts that do not postulate minimal pronouns and Feature Transmission (see also Maier 2009). Together with the proposals of the present paper, therefore, these theories might provide us with a different, semantically more transparent way of looking at the semantics of phi-features than the Minimal Pronoun Account.…”

“…Here, I take as a point of departure the presuppositional analysis of belief reports as defended by Geurts (1998), Romoli andSudo (2009), andMaier (2010). Combining this with the complex mental state descriptions leads us to redraw the de re/de dicto distinction: For ascriptions of attitudes other than belief there arises a parasitic or de credito reading, between the classic de re and de dicto.…”

“…L'interprétation de dicto correspond au cas où Mach ne sait pas nécessairement qui est Boltzmann, tandis que l'interpré-tation de re exige une relation d'accointance (ou directe) entre le sujet (Mach) et l'objet (Boltzmann) de l'attitude 9 . J'emprunte à [Maier 2009] la mention explicite de la relation d'accointance R dans la formalisation : ici elle permet de 7. "Not long ago, after a trying railway journey by night, when I was very tired, I got into an omnibus, just as another man appeared at the other end.…”
