Greases enhance most mechanical equipment in terms of joint performance and operation age by reducing friction and wear. However, they are also considered a dangerous source of soil and water pollution because of their synthetic nature. Renewable resource-based materials are a safe and environmentally friendly solution. In the present work, a comprehensive study is conducted to evaluate the performance of existing synthetic and biodegradable greases. This work also provides insights into existing literature and presents ideas for future development through general recommendations regarding the use of renewable resource-based ingredients as a replacement for traditional synthetic materials in conventional greases.
