Prevalence and Age-Related Changes of Corneal Astigmatism in Patients Undergoing Cataract Surgery in Northern China

Abstract: Purpose. To examine the magnitude, orientation, and age-related changes of corneal astigmatism of the eyes before cataract surgery. Setting. Hebei Eye Hospital, Hebei, China. Design. A clinical-based retrospective study. Results. The study consisted of 5662 eyes of 5662 consecutive cataract surgery patients with a mean age of 68.26 ± 10.39 (mean ± standard deviation (SD)) years (range 40 to 97 years), and 59.86% of the patients were women. Mean corneal astigmatism was 0.98 ± 0.76 diopter (D) (range 0.00–9.61 D… Show more

“…It is estimated that 67.7% of eyes had corneal astigmatism between 0.25 and 1.25 diopters (D), and 27.5% of eyes had astigmatism at 1.25 D or higher in the cataract population ( 1 ). Another study showed that corneal astigmatism in the range of 0.50–0.99 D was the most common (30.08%), followed by 1.00–1.49 D (22.15%) ( 2 ). A simple, accurate, effective, and safe method to correct astigmatism is the pursuit of surgeons.…”

“…A pproximately one-third of patients with cataracts are reported to have corneal astigmatism above 1 diopter (D) worldwide. [1][2][3][4] Due to the increasing demand for spectacle independence, toric intraocular lens (IOL) implantation is an effective technique for correcting regular astigmatism in patients with cataracts. However, deviation from the intended position lessens the reduction of astigmatism, leading to an increase in residual astigmatism that affects the visual outcomes of monofocal and multifocal toric IOL implantation.…”

“…Astigmatism is a refractive condition in which parallel rays of light entering the eye do not converge to a single focal point; further, it can be categorized as corneal, lenticular, and retinal astigmatism ( 1 ). In China, >47% of patients with cataract have preexisting astigmatism of >1.0 diopters (D) ( 2 , 3 ); moreover, ≈90% of these patients exhibit astigmatism of ≥0.5 D ( 4 ). Therefore, it is important to minimize postoperative residual astigmatism (RA) in these patients to allow excellent visual acuity (VA) and satisfactory vision quality.…”
