Prevalence and associated factors of baseline anemia among cervical cancer patients in Tikur Anbesa Specialized Hospital, Ethiopia

Abstract: Background Almost one patient with cancer in two is anemic. About 40 to 64% of cervical cancer patients are anemic at time of presentation. The rate of anemia increases with the use of chemotherapy, radiotherapy, hormonal therapy and associated with poorer treatment outcome and quality of life. “…Anemia was found in over four-fifths of CCa patients in our study. This estimate was significantly higher relative to earlier reports in Ethiopia (51.2%), Kenya (56.5%), Northern Nigeria (51%) and Korea (36.4%) ( 11 , 14 , 32 , 33 ). In the United States, however, Hufnagel and colleagues ( 34 ) found up to 64% of gynecologic cancer (including CCa) patients developed anemia within six months of their diagnosis while the European Cancer Anemia Survey (ECAS) found up to 68% prevalence of anemia among European cancer patients during a 6-month survey period ( 35 ).…”

“… 29 Another study also reported the worst results, in which 69% of participants were diagnosed with stage IV cervical cancer. 40 A study conducted at Kenyatta National Hospital also showed that 44.4% and 35.8% of the study population had stage II and stage III cervical cancer, respectively. 21 On the contrary, studies done by Chen et al 41 and Getahun et al 33 reported that slightly more than half (~̴ 53%) of participants were diagnosed with early stage (stage I) cervical cancer.…”

“…Vaccination against human papillomavirus and regular screening should be introduced and expanded to decrease morbidity and subsequent costs in both human lives and other resources [ 12 ]. In addition, early diagnosis of cervical cancer and prevention of anemia in cervical cancer patients can reduce the mortality rate of the disease [ 13 , 14 ]. Since there is limitation of data about determinants of mortality among cervical cancer patients in Ethiopia, this research will fill the gaps and be used as the base line information by health policy makers and administrators in the country.…”
