Prevalence and associated factors of knee osteoarthritis in a community-based population in Heilongjiang, Northeast China

Abstract: Few data exist concerning the prevalence of knee OA and associated factors in Northeast China. This study was undertaken to estimate the prevalence of radiographic and symptomatic knee OA among community residents and to elucidate relevant risk factors. Unmatched case-control study was adopted to study risk factors of knee OA. Radiographic OA was evaluated according to the Kellgren and Lawrence grading scheme. Statistical analyses included tests and logistic model regressions. A total of 1,196 people aged 40-8… Show more

“…A second model was identified for overall T 2 times which included gender as an additional predictor along with knee flexion moment during hopping. These are interesting findings as a gender predisposition for OA has been previously identified (Jiang et al, 2011) and warrants further investigation. However, the current study with its limited sample size is unable to make appropriate gender comparisons.…”

“…This may be the major reason why some of these studies did not reveal the negative OA-smoking association. Jiang et al [31] believed that cigarette smoking might be a risk factor for knee OA in rural dwellers but not in urban residents based on a study in Heilongjiang Province. The difference between rural dwellers and urban residents may due to the inadequate control of confounding factors, such as air pollution, air ventilations of indoor places in rural China and second-hand smoking.…”

“…Así hemos encontrado que existe un predominio de mujeres (77,8%) independientemente de la localización de la artrosis, que la edad media de los participantes es de 68 años y, a su vez, se objetivó un predominio de sobrepeso y obesidad (el 38,9 y el 47,6%, respectivamente) en los participantes en el estudio. Todos estos resultados son consistente con otros estudios epidemiológicos y revisiones publicadas 10,12,13,[15][16][17][18] .…”
