The present prevalence of blindness tended to be higher than those reported in Hong Kong (Michon et al 2002), Tibet (Dunzhu et al 2003), Taiwan (Hsu et al 2004), Beijing (Xu et al 2006), Handan (Liang et al 2008) or Nantong (Li et al 2008a), although a direct comparison with these results may be difficult because of differences in the age distribution or definitions of visual impairment. Although the two surveys from Tibet and Handan were performed on a rural population, the same as the present, a younger population in Tibet (All) and Handan ( ‡30) surveys may be the reason for the relative high prevalence in the present study.…”
