Prevalence and characteristics of molar Incisor Hypomineralisation (mIH) in the child population residing in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, India

Abstract: Prevalence of MIH using EAPD 2003 criteria was found to be similar to other studies evaluating children in different geographic locations such as Europe, South America etc. Using the EAPD standardised criteria, more studies should be conducted in other Indian regions, in order to further evaluate prevalence, characteristics and treatment needs for this clinically demanding condition.

“…A direct comparison with those reports is not possible due to non-uniform recording criteria, different index teeth, and differences in age group of cohorts recruited. Nevertheless, the prevalence of MIH in the present study is in line with the previously published reports from India (Parikh et al 2012;Mittal et al 2014). Quantitatively a similar extent of hypomineralisation was reported for both primary and permanent molars.…”

“…Furthermore, the findings have shown that, overall, lateral incisors are not as intensely affected in regards enamel-related problems, whereas the lower lateral incisors are the least affected. This is seen to be in par with the results garnered in the works of Lygidakis et al (2008b) 22 and Parikh et al 38 . In contrast, in the study of Zawaideh et al (2011) 24 , which took a sample of children from Jordan, the conclusion was drawn that lower lateral incisors were more commonly hypo-mineralized than upper laterals.…”
