Prevalence and Clinical Picture of Celiac Disease in Italian Down Syndrome Patients: A Multicenter Study

Abstract: This study reconfirms a high prevalence of celiac disease in Down syndrome. However, the diagnostic delay, the detection of atypical symptoms or silent form in one third of the cases, and the increased incidence of autoimmune disorders suggest the need for the screening of celiac disease in all Down syndrome patients.

“…Our findings confirmed the increased prevalence of CD among patients with DS reported by several studies in Europe, North America and Argentina. [7][8][9][10][11] The prevalence of CD in the general population in these countries ranges from 1:200 to 1:2,000, and among DS patients it presents a 20-200 fold increase. In Brazil, the prevalence for CD has been estimated to be 0.14% (1:687) in the central-western region 19 and 0.1% (1:1,000) in the south region.…”

“…1 Different studies have shown that patients with DS present several immune dysfunctions, 2,3 which lead to increased frequency of recurrent infections, as well as autoimmune diseases. A high association between DS and autoimmune diseases has been already reported by several authors, [4][5][6] with the most significant association with celiac disease (CD) [7][8][9][10][11] and autoimmune thyroiditis. 12,13 CD affects individuals of all ages and is characterized by permanent gluten intolerance.…”

“…Nos anos seguintes, vários trabalhos mostraram maior freqüência de DC em indivíduos com SD em diferentes populações, com prevalência variando de 3,2 a 10,3% [7][8][9][10][11] . O presente estudo teve como objetivos investigar a prevalência de DC em crianças com SD da região Sul do Brasil.…”
