Prevalence and correlates of depression in Chinese oldest-old

Abstract: Depression is a serious problem for the oldest-old but a number of correlates are consistently identified in the oldest-old, as well as the two other age groups in the elderly population. Therefore, aged care service practitioners must take these correlates into consideration in their prevention and treatment for depression for all different age groups in the aged.

“…Furthermore, our data is not in agreement with the studies which argue that the elderly who do not have someone to confide in, or an intimate relationship, present a higher susceptibility for depressive symptoms (e.g. Chou & Chi, 2005, Papadopoulos et al, 2005, Silva & Sequeira, 2002Stek et al, 2006). This result may be related to the fact that the intimate and marital relationships, in the context of institutionalization, often assume specificities and limitations related to the way these nursing homes work.…”

“…In some local epidemiologic surveys (Woo et al, 1994;Chi et al, 2005;Chou and Chi, 2005) that defined clinically significant depressive symptoms as having score on Geriatric Depression Scale >/ ¼ 8, higher prevalence of clinically significant depressive symptoms was reported. All these studies adopted one-phase design without a second phase validation of depressive symptoms by psychiatrists or psychologists.…”

“…Feelings of loneliness bring down older adults' quality of life, including decreased life satisfaction, increased health service utilization, and increased risk of mental illness (Chou & Chi, 2005;Golden et al, 2009;Luanaigh & Lawlor, 2008). According to Weiss's (1973) classic definition, loneliness consists of both social and emotional dimensions, which are inevitably affected by cultural context (Beal, 2006;Gierveld, 1998;Victor, Grenade, & Boldy, 2005).…”
