Prevalence and correlates of suicidal thoughts in patients with neuropsychiatric lupus

Abstract: Suicidal thoughts are common in patients with NPSLE. Neuropsychiatric manifestation per se, depression, anxiety and patients' subjective complaints can be risk factors for suicidal ideation. Screening for suicidal thoughts is vital in routine care of SLE patients.

“…Our finding emphasized the role of anxiety, which, according to the literature review, was a mostly ignored phenomenon in studies on SLE 39,40 despite the fact that anxiety symptoms seem to be more severe than depression in SLE sufferers and coexist with suicidal ideation. 11,41,42 Consistent with other authors, we suggest that many patients may not meet the diagnostic criteria of a particular anxiety disorder; 39 however, they may suffer from an increased level of anxiety and routine assessment of anxiety in patients with SLE seems vital. 8,39,40…”

“…This results in direct and indirect costs related to disease development, with the indirect costs often being higher [17]. The literature also presents the data confirming that patients with SLE often have suicidal tendencies as compared to the general population [18]. This may be associated with a direct impact of this disease on the Central nervous system (the neuropsychiatric lupus); however, this may also be significantly affected by the patient awareness of the impact of the disease on their common daily and occupational routine activities, inability to find a permanent job, and problems in their families caused by this disease.…”
