Prevalence and genotype distribution of human papillomavirus in 961,029 screening tests in southeastern China (Zhejiang Province) between 2011 and 2015

Abstract: Human papillomavirus infection plays a key role in the development of cervical cancer. To establish a foundation for HPV-based screening and vaccination programs, we investigated the HPV prevalence and genotypic distributions in Chinese women from Zhejiang Province. Between 2011 and 2015, a total of 961,029 samples from 2021 clinical hospitals were tested HPV genotype by a PCR-based hybridization gene chip assay, and 443,890 samples were evaluated cervical cytology by liquid-based cytology analysis. Our result… Show more

“…A large amount of clinical data has shown that high‐risk HPV infections are significantly age‐specific . High‐risk HPV infections have a very high positive rate, approaching 30%, in young women, especially those aged <25 years, but most are transient infections.…”

“…Geographical differences in HPV genotype distribution may affect the effectiveness of the HPV vaccine in different populations and different age groups. 9 When evaluating the effects of current prophylactic vaccines and developing new vaccines, the limited cross-protection among HPV types 10 and the heterogeneity in HPV type-specific distributions in different regions and different populations [11][12][13] should be considered. However, existing HPV vaccines have not fully considered the heterogeneity of HPV genotypes distribution in individual regions.…”

“…These studies demonstrate a HR-HPV infection rate ranging approximately 10-15% in Chinese women, which is in agreement with our finding. However, the method we used in the present study is simpler and less laborious compared with those used in previous investigations [22][23][24][25].…”

“…Globally, HR-HPV prevalence varies from continent to continent [21]. In China, for the survey of HR-HPV prevalence, different methods have been used [22][23][24][25]. Wu et al employed the Hybrid Capture 2 Assay (Qiagen, Hilden, Germany) for the detection of HR-HPV of 13 pooled types (HPV16, 18, 31, 33, 35, 39, 45, 51, 52, 56, 58, 59, and 68) in a total of 4215 women aged 17-54 years from 5 different geographical areas of China and discovered that HR-HPV prevalence was 12.4% [22].…”
