Prevalence and Health Correlates of Prostitution Among Patients Entering Treatment for Substance Use Disorders

Abstract: Prostitution was common among a sample of individuals entering substance use treatment in the United States and was associated with higher risk of physical and mental health problems. Increased efforts toward understanding prostitution among patients in substance use treatment are warranted. Screening for prostitution in substance use treatment could allow for more comprehensive care to this population.

“…Berstein et al (2012) conducted a study examining a brief intervention with adult heroin/cocaine users through an ED and found that 12% of the sample reported TS involvement. In another study examining TS involvement among adult substance users, Burnette et al (2008) found that ED care was associated with TS involvement for women. Patton et al (in press) examined TS involvement among a general sample of ED adult patients, including those with and without a history of substance use, and found that approximately 14% of the sample reported a history of TS involvement.…”

“…Similarly, IDU is an independent risk factor for HIV acquisition, according to BC surveillance data and as evidenced by the dramatic outbreak in HIV infections in Vancouver"s DTES in the 1990s (Buxton, 2003;. Further, involvement in sex work has been identified as a marker of risk for physical and mental health problems, and increased use of acute care services (Burnette, Lucas, Ilgen, Frayne, Mayo, & Weitlauf, 2008). IDU is similarly associated with multiple physical and mental health conditions, increased acute care service utilization, and barriers to care (Kerr et al 2004;Roberts et al, 2010).…”
