Prevalence and morphological characterisation of Cysticercus tenuicollis (Taenia hydatigena cysts) in sheep and goat from north India

Abstract: Taenia hydatigena is an adult parasite of dogs with the metacestode (Cysticercus tenuicollis) stage residing in ruminants and pigs. Documentation and surveillance data concerning to the prevalence and risk factors associated with the disease in India is largely lacking. In this experiment, 3,199 carcasses, including 760 sheep and 2,439 goat were examined for the presence of C. tenuicollis (T. hydatigena cysts) on post-mortem inspection at different slaughter houses/shops in northern India. Morphological analys… Show more

“…Although the significant differences in the number of examined Nigerian T. hydatigena isolates (from both intermediate hosts) could have influenced the outcome of the neutrality and nucleotide diversity indices, the hypothetical existence of host-specific strains which has been reported cannot be completely ruled out [28, 54, 55]…”

“…In this study, a molecular description of C. cerebralis isolates from sheep and goats was reported for the first time in Pakistan based on mt cox1 gene as mtDNA remains an important marker in exploring intraspecific variation due to maternal inheritance, conserved structure, higher evolution rate, high genetic divergence, and absence of recombination (64)(65)(66)(67)(68). The result demonstrates a high haplotype and low nucleotide diversity comparable to the population indices reported in Italy (Hd = 0.664, π = 0.004) (69) as well as in Egypt, where a considerable number of SNP in the cox1 gene, mostly non-parsimony informative with low genetic diversity and fewer haplotypes were reported (70).…”
