Prevalence of Cryptosporidium Infection among Inhabitants of 2 Rural Areas in White Nile State, Sudan

Abstract: Cryptosporidium , a protozoan parasite that causes watery diarrhea, is found worldwide and is common in areas with low water hygiene. In February 2014, 866 stool samples were collected from the inhabitants of 2 rural areas in White Nile State, Sudan. These stool samples were assessed by performing modified acid-fast staining, followed by examination under a light microscope. The overall positive rate of Cryptosporidium oocysts was 13.3%. Cryptosporidium oocysts were detected in 8.6% stool samples obtained from… Show more

“…6 Superior of nested PCR in the diagnosis of cryptosporidiosis and false negative results of modified Ziehl-Neelson technique might be due to the scanty number of the oocysts that are excreted with the feces which could be under detectable level. 10 Similar findings were observed by Maikai et al 2 and Helmy et al 10 Because of sensitivity and easily performance, PCR seems to be an obvious choice for detection of Cryptosporidium from the fecal specimens.…”

“…Therefore, the use of water purification systems and prohibition of grazing farm animals near the drinking water resources are important for preventing Cryptosporidium infection. 6 For this reason, incidence pattern of cryptosporidiosis in livestock and other reservoirs should also be assessed in future studies in Erbil.…”

“…High prevalence of intestinal helminthiasis was reported among school children in sub-Saharan African countries [1,13,14]. However, only a few reports were conducted on the prevalence of intestinal helminthiasis in Sudan [6,15,16]; it is also especially difficult to obtain information regarding the infection status of intestinal helminths among village residents in the rural river basin area.…”

“…In this study, the prevalence rate of Cryptosporidium spp. infection was 7.7%, which was higher than the percentage reported in Argentina (0.2%) and Vietnam (5%); however, it was less than that reported in Sudan (13.3%) [2931]. Similarly, in a study performed in San Pedro Itzicán, located on the border of Chapala lake, the prevalence of Cryptosporidium spp.…”
