Prevalence of antibodies against respiratory viruses (parainfluenza virus type 3, respiratory syncytial virus, reovirus and adenovirus) in relation to productivity in Syrian Awassi sheep

Abstract: Awassi sheep sera from all the provinces of the Syrian Arab Republic were tested for RSV, P13, REO and Adeno viruses (IIF and AGID tests). RSV was the most prevalent infection with 63.6% of samples seropositive, followed by REO, P13 and Adenovirus with seroprevalences of 27.3%, 24% and 8.1% respectively. Animals were more frequently infected by RSV alone. Mixed infections were also identified but the occurrence was not high. The RSV and REO virus infections occurred more frequently when transhumant flocks trav… Show more

“…Avian reoviruses (ARVs) are widespread in nature and are associated with a wide range of diseases affecting various avian species 1 2 , including chickens 3 4 , pheasants 5 , turkeys 6 7 , ducks 8 9 10 , geese 11 , pigeons 12 , quails 13 14 15 , raptors 16 , and psittacine birds 17 . However, most clinical diseases from ARV infections are observed in broiler and broiler breeder chickens 18 .…”

“…82% of sheep in Peru were seropositive for PI3 antibodies [31]. In the Middle East, PI3 was one of the prevalent viruses in Syria with 24% of samples were positive [32]. In a previous study, total of 31 variables including production and health management practices were tested as risk factors for seropositive flocks for M. agalactiae and analyzed using logistic regression analysis.…”

“…All avian species of domestic poultry and wild birds are very susceptible to ARV infections, especially when they are young [14]. ARV infections have been reported in various avian species including chickens [15], geese [16,17], turkeys [18,19], ducks [20][21][22], pigeons [23], quail [24][25][26], and psittacine birds [27]. However, meat-type chickens have been shown to bemore susceptible to ARV infection than other avian species (De Gussem et al, 2010;Jones and El-Taher, 1985).…”
