Prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors and management practices of acute coronary syndrome in a tertiary care hospital

Abstract: The contemporary profile of treatment patterns for patients with ACS indicates an improved adherence to the guidelines. The alarmingly high rate of modifiable risk factors remains a cause of concern and a challenge that needs to be tackled, as better control of cardiovascular risk factors is expected to have a favorable impact on the incidence of ACS.

“…We have observed that the median age of ACS was 54 years among smokers and 73 years among patients treated for hypertension. Our results were in agreement with those of Dilip et al [ 15 ]. Due to the increased rate of cardiac events in smokers, further efforts for smoking cessation must be performed.…”

“…Diabetes was associated with all ACS and to UA/NSTEMI. Our results are consistent with literature data [ 15 , 35 , 36 ]. Ahmadi et al concluded that patients with metabolic syndrome have a significantly greater prevalence, severity, and prognosis of coronary artery disease [ 37 ].…”

“…Although there is no a higher percentage of diabetics into the STEMI group with respect to NSTEMI, Mexican adults may be transitioning to this state, and therefore, in the coming years, this population will have more cases of STEMI with diabetics as it is seen in other developing countries such as India (the population with the highest burden of ACS), where there are reports of this trend [12,13].…”

“…Moreover, omentin-1 levels are inversely correlated with obesity, body mass index, hemoglobin, cholesterol, and type 2 diabetes mellitus [ 5 ]. Serum omentin-1 level was low in the most types of ischemic heart disease compared to normal subjects [ 6 ], but serum omentin-1 is positively correlated with high density lipoprotein (HDL) that is independently correlated with IHD, and many studies showed a significant correlation between low omentin-1 serum level and progressions of IHD [ 7 ].…”
