Prevalence of common sensitizing aeroallergens in Egyptian asthmatic patients

Abstract: Background: Aeroallergens and food allergens play a key role in the pathogenesis of asthma; they are the target for future immunotherapy worldwide. Food allergens have been studied often in Egypt, but data are defective concerning the prevalent Egyptian aeroallergens that can be affected by the climatic conditions in Egypt. So, our study aimed to explore the dominant sensitizing aeroallergens in Egyptian patients with bronchial asthma. Methods: Cross-sectional study performed on 122 Egyptian asthmatic patients.… Show more

“…The mean serum IgE level in the current study was 169.5 ± 20.13 IU/ml, which is comparable to the studies of Ishak et al (188.95 ± 167.75 IU/ml) 22 and Ahmed et al (99.83 ± 233.81 = IU/ml) 23 on Egyptian asthmatic children. It is also comparable to that in asthmatic children in Iraq (189.59 ± 216.16 IU/ml) 24 but substantially lower than the mean serum total IgE levels in other countries, such as those of asthmatic children in India (700.97–571.01 IU/ml) 25 .…”

“…During the study period, the average high temperature was 96° F, and the average low was 74° F [ 29 ]. As regards the prevalence of fungal allergens (15.57%) [ 30 ] and attendance rate in AIU (1056 airway-allergic patients within six months), the sample size calculated, with a confidence interval of 95% and power of 80%, was 166 patients. Due to the potential non-response rate, the required sample size has increased to 200 patients by allowing an additional 20% in sample recruitment.…”
