Prevalence of corneal astigmatism before cataract surgery

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to describe and analyze the prevalence and pattern of corneal astigmatism in cataract surgery candidates. In a prospective cross-sectional study, preoperative demographics, and keratometric and refractive values of cataract surgery candidates were collected from January 2013 to December 2014. Axial length (AL) and flat and steep keratometry measurements were optically measured by a partial coherence interferometry device (IOLMaster). This study consisted of 2156 eyes of 1317 patie… Show more

“…By contrast, the percentage of WTR astigmatism decreased with age. These findings are consistent with the characteristics seen in populations from different countries and regions [6, 9, 27, 28]. These changes have been found to be due to a discrepancy in eyelid morphology and power [29].…”

“…It is well known that the corneal astigmatism could be influenced by the cut we make into the cornea to enter into the eye. For this reason several authors concentrated their attention on how to minimize astigmatism onset after surgery, focusing their attention to the astigmatism present before 2224 and after surgery. 2529 To make such an evaluation, it is mandatory to perform a vectorial analysis.…”

“…An estimated three-quarters of eyes undergoing cataract surgery have astigmatism >0.5 D 1 3 and one-third have >1.0 D. 1 , 2 , 4 The correction of pre-existing astigmatism is fundamental to the goal of achieving emmetropia and increased spectacle independence after cataract surgery. 5 Partial-thickness arcuate incisions, corneal limbal relaxing incisions, and toric IOLs are the most commonly performed procedures to address pre-existing astigmatism at the time of cataract surgery; however, astigmatic outcomes are often suboptimal, particularly in patients with pre-existing dry eye.…”
