Prevalence of cytomegalovirus antibodies in blood donars at the National Blood Transfusion Centre, Nairobi

Abstract: Background: Cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection in susceptible patients is associated with serious morbidity and a high mortality. Transmission of cytomegalovirus infection through blood transfusion is markedly reduced by transfusion of CMV seronegative blood products, or by transfusion of leucodepleted blood products. Objective: To determine the prevalence CMV IgG and IgM antibodies among blood donors at the National Blood Transfusion Services (NBTS), Nairobi. Design: Cross-sectional descriptive study. Setting: F… Show more

“…But, this observed increment of seropositivity with an increase in the donor's age category was not statistically significant. These results agree with the reports from Pakistan, Nigeria and Gahanna which showed a larger prevalence among the oldest age category donors [13][14][15]. This gradual increment could be due to small numbers of older age donors or by a relatively longer exposure time of old age individuals than peoples in the young age groups.…”

“…But, the trend seems to lower among highly educated population and younger subjects. A study in Kenya also showed a similar finding [15]. We also found that sexual contact and blood transfusion histories of the participants have no association with their serostatus.…”

“…This may not have been a major problem for CMV, which reaches a high seroprevalence in sub Saharan Africa [51], [52]. While influenza is clearly present in sub Saharan Africa [53], [54], limited availability of epidemiological data make it difficult to assess the expected recall response of our patients to this antigen.…”

“…The problem is particularly important in preterm infants with low birth weight, transplant patients, patients with congenital immunodeficiency, patients receiving immunosuppressants, those with acquired immunodeficiency like AIDS, and thalassemic patients. Further it is recommended to determine the prevalence of CMV antibodies in these patients in order to establish the magnitude of the demand for CMV safe blood (43,49).…”
