Prevalence of Dementia Subtypes in El Prat de Llobregat, Catalonia, Spain: The PRATICON Study

Abstract: Background: Studies on dementia subtypes show a wide variation in the prevalence of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and vascular dementia (VD) worldwide. However, studies reporting on Lewy body dementia (LBD) and frontotemporal dementia (FTD) are sparse. Aims: To describe the prevalence ofdementia and subtypes. Method: A 34% sample of 5,150 subjects aged 70 years and over in El Prat de Llobregat (Barcelona) were screened by the Mini-Mental State Examination. When scoring <24, participants were assessed to establish a… Show more

“…AD was diagnosed in 63.7% of the cases, a result similar to those obtained by other studies that have shown AD to affect more than 50% of cases of individuals aged 65 or more years [6,28], and more than 60% among still older age groups [38,39]. As the study population comprised a high percentage of individuals over 80 years old, this would explain the similarity with the results of studies of groups of more advanced age.…”

“…The prevalence in the most advanced age groups was higher than obtained in Brazilian population-based studies [28,30]. The hypothesis that population-based studies for the older elderly underrepresent and consequently underestimate the prevalence of dementia should be considered, because adhesion to the research and accurate diagnosis are both difficult in this age group due to the greater frequency of physical limitations and comorbidities [38]. In this study, 36.1% of the participants underwent clinical evaluation in the home environment, a larger percentage than described by another study with a similar data collection strategy [28]; this ensured greater participation by the older elderly who tend to refuse, as well as by those at advanced stages of the disease.…”

“…The higher prevalence of CIND in women compared to men (43.5 vs. 50.7%, respectively) corroborates the findings by Nunes et al [19] (14.2 vs. 9.5%, respectively) and other studies [29,30]. Considering dementia, a difference in the prevalence between genders (3.05% in men vs. 4.82% in women over 60 years) was also reported by the Framingham Study [31] as well as by many others [12,32,33]. …”

“…This α-synuclein protein aggregate is thought to disturb neurotransmitter release of acetylcholine (Ach) and dopamine (DA) and lead to dysfunction of the corticosubcortical network [4, 5]. DLB is the second most common type of degenerative dementia after Alzheimer disease (AD), accounting for 10–20% of all dementia cases [6, 7]. The diagnosis of DLB was made using criteria mostly based on clinical symptoms.…”
