Sports accidents are thought to be responsible for up to one third of oral and craniofacial injuries, 1 and they can be considered a major public oral health problem due to the impact of the burden of care, and the disruption to daily life, not to mention the treatment cost. 1,2 Dental trauma has been said to be the fifth most prevalent condition, reported to affect 1 billion people worldwide with an economic cost estimated to be over $US 5 million annually. 3 Sports dental injuries can cause immediate irreparable harm with possible sequelae for years afterwards such as pulp necrosis and tooth resorption. 4 Retrospective reviews indicate that sporting activity oral injuries may affect up to 52% of children aged 11-13 years, 5 and up to 70% of athletes have reported at least one orofacial injury. 6 Sports mouthguards (SM) are effective in preventing and reducing sports-related orofacial injuries 1,6-8 by absorbing and distributing direct impact energy and reducing the forces to the dental hard tissues, 7-9 the mandibular condyle and the articular disk. 10,11 The World Dental Federation (FDI) has recommended that SM should be used to prevent dental injury, 12 and further recommends that customized SM be provided under dental supervision. 13 While discussion of recommendations from various associations is beyond the scope of this review, some sports organizations recommend that SM should be mandatory for all ages for sports events. 14 | Mouthguard definitions and standardsThe Glossary of Prosthodontic Terms defines a mouthguard as a removable occlusal device that is useful in reducing mouth injuries

O objetivo deste estudo é apresentar um panorama da inserção de conteúdos sobre Odontologia do Esporte (OE) nos projetos pedagógicos dos cursos de Odontologia na Região Sudeste do Brasil. Para isso, foi realizado um estudo transversal de base documental, no qual foram analisadas as matrizes curriculares disponibilizadas nos sítios web oficiais das Instituições de Ensino Superior (IES) localizadas no sudeste brasileiro, cadastradas no portal e-MEC do Ministério da Educação. O software estatístico GraphPad Prism 8.1.2 foi utilizado na análise das variáveis. Os resultados desta pesquisa refletem a análise dos componentes curriculares de 144 IES localizadas no sudeste do Brasil. Destas, apenas cinco (3,47%) informaram ofertar em suas matrizes curriculares a disciplina de OE. IES públicas ofertam mais a disciplina que IES privadas. A carga horária média da disciplina é de 47,5±8,66 horas. Em conclusão, a abordagem da OE é incipiente nos cursos de Odontologia do sudeste brasileiro, especialmente nas IES privadas. Reformulações e atualizações dos projetos pedagógicos para a inclusão de tópicos destinados ao ensino dos princípios da área são necessárias, a fim de despertar o interesse e o reconhecimento da especialidade no Brasil.

IntroductionMouthguards (MGs) have the potential to prevent contact sport‐related dental injuries. However, varying perceptions of their effectiveness persist, influencing recommendations by dental professionals.AimTo assess the attitudes, knowledge, and perceptions of orthodontists, other dental practitioners (general dentists and other dental specialists), and orthodontic patients involved in contact sports regarding the use of MGs.MethodologyA cross‐sectional survey was designed to collect information from dental clinicians (orthodontists and other dental practitioners) and their orthodontic patients about using MGs during sports participation. A convenience sampling technique was used to recruit the participants for an online survey. A total of 107 (32 males/75 females) dental clinicians and 147 (75 males/72 females) orthodontic patients (mean age 17.5 ± 5.84 years) participated in the study. Pre‐validated questionnaires, specifically designed for dental clinicians and orthodontic patients, were used. Data were analyzed using SPSS software (version 28.0; SPSS).ResultsNearly 50% of dental clinicians have recently recommended MGs to their patients in their clinical practice out of which 59% preferred the stock type; 33% of dental clinicians enquired their patients about involvement in contact sports during initial visits. The majority of orthodontic patients acquired knowledge about MGs through the Internet. More than half of orthodontic patients expressed unwillingness to pay for MGs, and 89% of orthodontic patients found using MGs during contact sports uncomfortable.ConclusionThe findings provide valuable insights into the practices and attitudes of dental clinicians and orthodontic patients regarding MGs, their recommendations, and the comfort levels associated with using them during contact sports.
