Prevalence of Endoscopically Identified Heterotopic Gastric Mucosa in the Proximal Esophagus

Abstract: Endoscopic detection of HGMPE is influenced by the endoscopist's thorough search of this entity, and thus, more time devoted to such a search may lead to higher detection rates.

“…CIPs were found with a high prevalence (13.8%) in this study; however, the prevalence has been reported to be 1.0-5.1%, even in recent studies [17,[23][24][25], and generally varies from 0.1 to 10% [10]. This conflict may represent a difference in the visualization of the CIP between whitelight imaging and NBI.…”

“…Although CIPs are often overlooked because they are just below the UES [13,17], NBI may facilitate the detection of CIPs, because NBI emphasizes the visualization of surface vascular and mucosal patterns [16].…”

“…Para la práctica clínica, hay evidencia acerca de que la identificación de MGHEC es más frecuentemente realizada por endoscopistas que ponen especial atención en su búsqueda y detección (23). De allí que se propongan tres acciones de mejora para lograr una mayor detección de la probablemente subdiagnosticada MGHEC: 1.…”

“…In future studies, it is very important that the endoscopists are aware and to look for this lesions. Several studies have already reported that the pick up rates were higher when endoscopist were aware of the entity (Maconi et al, 2000;Azar et al, 2007). The third controversy relates the clinical significance of HGMP/CIP in clinical practice.…”
