Prevalence of Genital Human Papilloma Virus Infection and Genotypes among Young Women in Sicily, South Italy

Abstract: Infection with oncogenic human papilloma virus (HPV) types is a necessary cause of cervical cancer. This study assessed the prevalence of HPV infection and genotypes among 1,006 randomly selected women, ages 18 to 24 years, living in Sicily (south Italy). The overall HPV rate was 24.1% (95% confidence interval, 21.5-26.9). The most frequent types were HPV-16 (4.5%), HPV-53 (2.7%), and HPV-84 (2.6%). The prevalence of vaccine types HPV-6, HPV-11, and HPV-18 was 1.4%, 0.1%, and 1.3%, respectively. Cytologic abno… Show more

“…These findings are consistent with the HPV DNA prevalence rates reported by other Italian groups (1,6,14,51) and match the rates of prevalence from combined DNA-and RNA-based studies (2,7,10,13,24). As reported earlier, the study detected a number of mixed infections ( Table 4).…”

“…This finding is similar with data reported in other Italian areas, Germany and Denmark, 21,26,27,34 reflecting a higher risk in young sexually active women who, however, mostly have a transient and asymptomatic infection, with a spontaneous HPV clearance in 70-90% of cases within 12-13 months 24 …”

“…The second most frequent type was HPV-53 (15.7%) in accordance with other Italian 34 and Spanish studies, 28,39,40 both in general population and in females with abnormal smears. In fact, although it is not recurrent among the most prevalent types worldwide, it was found as the second and the fifth, 21,30 most frequent genotype isolated in Italian studies which considered general female population and females with abnormal smears.…”

“…These risk factors are either biological, such as co-infections with other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), or behavioral, such as sexual habits. A consistent association has been demonstrated between an increased lifetime number of sexual partners and HPV infection among women [4][5][6]. However, a number of other factors, such as young age at first sexual intercourse, use of oral contraceptives, and smoking have shown inconsistent associations with HPV infection [6][7][8][9].…”
