Prevalence of human papillomavirus types in North and Central regions of Mexico

Abstract: Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a DNA virus linked to mucosal and cutaneous carcinogenesis. More than 200 different HPV types exist. We carried out a transversal study to investigate the prevalence of HPV types in two regions of Mexico. A total of 724 genital and non-genital samples from women (F) and men (M) were studied; 241 (33%) from North-Eastern (NE) and 483 (66%) from South-Central (SC) Mexico. The overall prevalence was 87%. In genital lesions from females, the NE group showed a prevalence of HPV types 1… Show more

“…Moreover, a report in the east coast state of Michoacan showed that HPV59 was the prevalent genotype in single infections, followed by HPV51 and HPV45 [17]. In contrast, a study in north-eastern (NE) and south-central (SC) Mexico showed that HPV 16 frequency is the highest among males and females with genital lesions; however, clear differences in frequency were emphasized (37.5% in NE versus 14.3% in SC) [18]. All the adding evidence awareness that HPV vaccination strategies in Mexico should be geographically specific.…”

“…In south-central Mexico HPV-52 was the most prevalent, followed by HPV-16. 15 Likewise, in northeast Mexico, 59% of samples were positive for at least one HPV genotype, and HPV-16 was the most prevalent genotype, followed by HPV-18. 16 In a study conducted in healthy women in Acapulco, in the state of Guerrero, located in southern Mexico, the prevalence of HPV was 37.6%.…”

“…Finally, we observed a high frequency of multiple infections with HPV53 as the most frequent type, this could be due to multiple factors, among which the socioeconomic and demographic characteristics of the Canatlán population stand out. This community is mainly rural and registers a high rate of migration of agricultural workers to the United States and other agricultural regions of Mexico, the movement of these individuals could favor the entry of different HPV genotypes that are not frequent among the resident population (Luna-Aguirre et al, 2018).…”
