Prevalence ofMycoplasma bovisudder infection in dairy cattle: Preliminary field investigation in southeast France

Abstract: These preliminary results suggest that the prevalence of udder infections with M. bovis is very low in dairy herds in the southeast of France. These two studies provide preliminary data, that can be used to derive working hypotheses for future statistically representative investigations at the national level.

“…In a study conducted in herds in Japan, the prevalence of M. bovis was higher than in other species obtained in that study, representing 59.7% of the isolates (Higuchi et al 2013). In southeastern France, the prevalence of clinical mastitis by this agent is less than 1% (Arcangioli et al 2011).…”

“…In the European Union countries of Belgium, France, and Greece, the range in prevalence was less than 1% to 5.4% of herds. [21][22][23] Yet surveys done in Mexico, 24 Iran, 25 and Australia 26 indicate prevalence estimates as high as 55% to 100% of herds. In New Zealand, McDonald and coworkers 27 surveyed 244 herds and could not detect Mycoplasma sp in any bulk tank samples, suggesting a very low prevalence.…”

“…Up to 100% of calves can be seropositive for M. bovis in infected feedlots (Arcangioli et al, 2008). In contrast only a few sporadic cases of mastitis and otitis media are reported each year (Arcangioli et al, 2011;Chazel et al, 2010) USA, mastitis, arthritis, otitis media and reproductive disorders are frequent clinical outcomes of M. bovis infections (Maunsell et al, 2011).…”
