Abstract: The prevalence of Streptococcus mutans and lactobacilli was determined in 62 18-month-old Dutch children with a cleft lip and/or palate. Plaque and saliva samples were collected, a dental examination was performed, and the parents were interviewed with a structured questionnaire regarding general health, dietary habits, fluoride exposure, and socioeconomic class. “…The average DMFT of 2.8 for the cleft control group was higher than the average DMFT for age matched Queensland children and the non-cleft control group. This was in agreement with Bokhout et al, 21,22 Dahllof et al 1 and Johnsen and Dixon, 3 who reported that patients with an oral cleft had poorer dental health than patients with no oral cleft. However, this trend was not evident between the cleft and non-cleft treatment groups.…”

“…Among the cariogenic microbes, the roles of Streptococci and Lactobacilli have been investigated in CL/P subjects as well [18,19]. In addition to a sugar rich diet, poor oral hygiene maintenance, lack of motivation to perform regular preventive dental home care, low uoride exposure, and malaligned teeth have been put forward as possible explanations [20].…”
