Prevalence of Lacrimal Gland Prolapse in the Functional Blepharoplasty Population

Guy G. Massry

Abstract: Lacrimal gland prolapse is a common finding during functional upper blepharoplasty surgery and appears to be a normal involutional periorbital aging change. Most cases are moderate in degree (as defined in the article), and not associated with specific preoperative symptoms or complaints, except lateral hooding with concomitant visual field deficit. Repositioning the gland intraoperatively is generally complication free and typically not associated with increased morbidity or healing time. The clinical signifi… Show more

“…In a recent prospective study of nearly 60 patients, 60% were noted to have intraoperative findings of lacrimal gland prolapse, which the author treated with suture repositioning. 10 It is important to note that this sample of patients underwent functional blepharoplasty and may be less applicable to the cosmetic blepharoplasty realm.…”

“…It is typically located in the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses. [1][2][3] Orbital involvement usually results from direct extension of contiguous structures; however, the orbit may be the first and unique place of NKTCL's manifestation, 2 as reported in this case. In general, extranodal NKTCL has a highly aggressive behavior with poor response to radiotherapy and chemotherapy, and therefore poor prognosis.…”

“…Laterally, the upper eyelid/brow depression is generally concealed by lateral brow and brow fat pad ptosis, and possibly lacrimal gland prolapse. 24 Recently, a procedure to transpose a native vascularized fat pedicle from the eyelid/orbit proper to the preaponeurotic space of the eyelid was reported. 14 The goal of this procedure is to preserve rather than excise, robust, and progenitor cellrich 25 nasal fat, and redistribute it to the central eyelid, which clinically tends to hollow with age.…”
