Prevalence of Listeria species in camel sausages from retail markets in Aydin province in Turkey and RAPD analysis of Listeria monocytogenesisolates

Abstract: Samples were taken from 100 camel sausages from the different retail markets in Aydin province in the south-west of Turkey and they were tested for the presence of Listeria spp by biochemical methods. Samples were enriched using Listeria Enrichment Broth and they were inoculated onto Listeria Selective Agar. Listeria monocytogenes was isolated from nine samples (9%), Listeria innocua from 14 samples (14%) and Listeria welshimeri from two samples(2%). A 701 bp fragment of listeriolysin O sequence for L. monocyt… Show more

“…The organism was detected in camel sausages obtained from a retail market (Ozbey et al . ), and this could be attributed to postharvest contamination. One plausible explanation for the rare occurrence of L. monocytogenes in camels could be explained by feeding behaviour.…”

“…Determination of genetic relatedness of L. monocytogenes strains isolated from milk. All L. monocytogenes isolates were genotyped using Random Amplification of Polymorphic DNA (RAPD) with the nonspecific primer OPA-11 (5'-CA AT CG CC GT-3') (Ozbey et al 2006). Reactions were carried out in a mixture of 25 µl, containing: 1 × PCR buffer with 2.0 mM MgCl 2 (Promega, United States), 1.5 mM MgCl 2 (ABO, Poland), 200 µM dNTPs (Promega, United States), 1.0 µM primer OPA-11 (Oligo.pl, Poland), 1.25 U Taq DNA polymerase (Promega, United States), ultrapure water (Merck, Poland), and 3.0 µl DNA.…”

“…Furthermore, most cattle and sheep farms in Turkey does not have adequate hygiene precautions and animals live in a natural environment together with people. Ozbey et al, 2006 aimed to study was determine the occurrence of Listeria spp. in food, the environment, in animals and to observe the relationship between these parameters in east.…”
