Prevalence of vibration-induced white finger in fluorspar mines in Weardale.

Abstract: A combined epidemiological and clinical study of vibration-induced white finger (VWF) was carried out involving 115 men in four fluorspar mines. The overall prevalence of VWF was found to be 50 % among 42 vibration-exposed subjects, while that of constitutional white finger (CWF) was 5-6 % in all men studied.

“…In the early 1960s HAVS was reported in hard-rock miners using jackleg hammers and stopper drills in Canada [10][11][12] . Subsequently reports came from Europe [13][14][15] , Japan 16,17) , and Korea, together with further reports from Canada [19][20][21][22][23][24] and America 25) . The prevalence ranged from 12.5 to 50% and the median latent intervals 26) .…”

“…The results of a number of surveys concerning the prevalence and the incidence of HAVS among lumberjacks (Pyykko¨1974;Pyykko¨et al 1982), foundry chippers (Behrens et al 1982), grinding operators (Pelmear et al 1975;Starck et al 1983), shipyard workers (Bovenzi et al 1980) and miners (Chatterjee et al 1987;Rodgers et al 1982) have been published in the scientific literature. However, there little attention has been given to the question of whether exposure to local vibration from the handlebars of motorcycles might be the cause of symptoms in the hand-arm system of motorcycle riders.…”

“…The prevalence of Raynaud's phenomenon has been estimated to be about 5 0J0 for men (16) and 20070 for younger women (17). Thus the prevalences found in our study were within the normal range for young women in pharmacy and for female dentists.…”
