Prevalência das alterações metabólicas em pacientes portadores de queixas vestibulares

Abstract: FORMA DE ESTUDO: Clínico prospectivo. As alterações enco… Show more

“…Literature data estimate that the occurrence of GMD is between 42% and 80% in patients with tinnitus and dizziness 2,6,7 , whereas 2.5 to 15% of the population presents asymptomatic hypoglycemia 4 or some affection of glucose tolerance curves 6 . In Brazil, GMD have already been considered the most frequent cause of labyrinthic dysfunctions of metabolic etiology 7 , and according to a recent survey in our population, they were documented by clinical history and fast glucose levels in 13% of the patients with vestibular symptoms 1 . The reluctance of some researchers in accepting that GMD may be a causal factor of balance disorders is lack of objective documentation of its direct implication in the genesis of vestibular problems.…”

“…One of the reasons for such disagreement lies in the impossibility of observing in vivo histopathological affections to the labyrinth, a situation that limits the investigation of the topic. The confirmation of higher prevalence of GMD in patients with cochlear-vestibular disorders when compared to the general population [1][2][3][4] is only indirect evidence of its importance in clinical manifestations presented by these patients.…”

“…Many authors related auditory disorders, including tinnitus, to metabolic alterations (6,(9)(10)(11)(12)(13)(14). Among the problems related to lipid metabolism, increasing levels of blood cholesterol and triglycerides have been described.…”

“…These alterations could be related to peripheral resistance to insulin and hyperinsulinemia, which may be responsible for increasing in the rate of production of triglycerides. On the other hand, a hyperlipidic diet could cause damage on hair cells, impairing normal functioning of inner ear (10).…”
