Introduction: The aging of the world population is reflected in the penitentiary setting, with a progressive increase of elderly inmates. These prisoners present complex clinical processes with multiple comorbidities, and require a specialized approach. However, resources have not yet been adapted to the unique characteristics of this vulnerable subpopulation. The aim of this review is to highlight the relevance of psychogeriatrics in prison, detecting the most prevalent diseases and outlining the needs of elderly inmates. Material and method: Narrative review through databases of those studies that analyze psychopathologies among inmates over 50. Results: Elderly inmates present a high prevalence of substance use (especially alcohol), affective symptoms (depression) and cognitive deterioration. A significant presence of personality disorders, anxiety, post-traumatic disorders, psychotic disorders, and physical comorbidities is also observed, with rates higher than among young convicts and the general geriatric population. There is a higher prevalence for any diagnosis amongst women, mainly for affective disorders. Discussion: Prisoners over 50 have a different profile from other prison population. They suffer from more physical and mental illnesses, and so require specific health and social approaches. It would be advisable to adapt clinical care by optimizing resources, developing prison psychogeriatrics and establishing specific assessment and treatment methods.

The study aims to determine the rate of dual diagnosis (DD), examine the most common mental disorders, and determine whether a history of childhood sexual/physical abuse (CSA/CPA) is associated with this phenomenon. One-hundred and eighty inmates from a Spanish prison were assessed using the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview and the Addiction Severity Index-6. The data showed that 46.8% of the males and 65.1% of the females had a substance use disorder. With regard to CPA, similar percentages were found in both genders. Nevertheless, rates of CSA were highest in females. Logistic regression analysis was performed by gender. CPA was predictor of DD for males, and CSA was predictor of DD for females, showing the greatest weight. In addition, in both cases, the number of drugs of abuse was an adequate predictor. We can state that these forms of maltreatment are risk factors for the development of a broad range of psychopathological problems.

Estudio no experimental, de tipo descriptivo-correlacional, cuyo objetivo fue determinar la relación existente entre los patrones de personalidad patológica y la conducta delictiva, en 127 participantes hombres, con rango de edad entre 20 y 59 años y pertenecientes a un centro penitenciario de Colombia; a partir de la aplicación del Inventario Clínico Multiaxial de Millon-III (MCMI-III), en su adaptación española y la revisión de la tipología de la conducta delictiva, establecida en el Código Penal Colombiano. Los resultados a partir del coeficiente de correlación ETA indicaron una correlación significativa, entre los patrones patológicos compulsivo (.67), autodestructivo (.66), y evitativo (.64), con la conducta delictiva. Adicionalmente, se determinó que el 44,6% puntuó en más de dos escalas; los patrones clínicos narcisista y compulsivo, la patología grave de la personalidad paranoide, el síndrome clínico bipolar y el síndrome clínico grave de trastorno delirante se identificaron como los más prevalentes y se discutió su relación de acuerdo al tipo de delito.
