The aim of the present study was to determine the seroprevalence of infection by the bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) on family farms, as well as to study the risk factors associated with the infection. In total, 319 blood serum samples were collected from cattle, of reproductive age (>24 months) in 24 herds from 11 cities of the brejo microregion in Pernambuco. The samples were subjected to the seroneutralization test to detect anti-BVDV antibodies. In order to identify the risk factors associated with the BVDV, a questionnaire epidemiologic was applied and followed by statistical analysis of logistic regression, with the serological test considered as the dependent variable (reagent or non-reagent). A prevalence of 51.1% (163/319; C.I. 45.5% -56.7%) was found in the present study. Of the 24 herds sampled, 100.0% contained at least one reagent animal. The prevalence in the counties ranged from 23.1% to 70.0%. The following risk factors were identified in the present study: not providing colostrum (OR 3.85; p=0.018); disease unknown (OR 2.54; p=0.001) and consortium breeding (OR 1.76; p=0.013). Based on these results, it was clear that BVDV infection is widespread in herds on family farms in the microregion studied herein. Health education policies must be implemented for producers and professionals who provide technical assistance. In addition, based on the risk factors identified in the present study, hygiene-sanitary measures should be implemented in order to reduce the prevalence of the BVDV. Key words: BVDV. Cattle. ResumoObjetivou-se com este estudo determinar a soroprevalência e estudar os fatores de risco associados à infecção pelo vírus da diarreia viral bovina (BVDV) nas unidades produtivas de agricultura familiar. Foram coletadas 319 amostras de soro sanguíneo, de bovinos em idade reprodutiva (>24 meses), procedentes de 24 rebanhos bovinos em 11 municípios da microrregião brejo pernambucano. As amostras foram submetidas ao teste de soroneutralização para detecção de anticorpos anti-BVDV. Para a identificação dos fatores de risco associados ao BVDV, foi aplicado um questionário epidemiológico e foi realizada uma análise estatística de regressão logística, considerando como variável dependente o exame sorológico (reagente ou não reagente). Observou-se com este estudo uma prevalência de 51,1% (163/319; I.C. 45,5% -56,7%). Dos 24 rebanhos amostrados, 100% apresentaram pelo menos um animal reagente. A prevalência nos municípios variou de 23,1% a 70,0%. Os fatores de risco identificados neste estudo foram: não fornecer colostro (OR 3,85; p=0,018); não conhecer a enfermidade (OR 2,54; p=0,001) e criação consorciada (OR 1,76; p=0,013). RESUMOO presente estudo teve como objetivo determinar a frequência e os fatores de risco para a infecção pelo Herpesvírus Bovino Tipo 1 (BoHV-1) em fêmeas bovinas leiteiras na região Amazônica maranhense. Amostras de soro de animais não vacinados contra o BoHV-1 e provenientes de 40 propriedades foram submetidas à técnica de ELISA indireto. Em cada propriedade avaliada, aplicou-se ainda um questionário epidemiológico para investigar os fatores de risco que poderiam estar associados à infecção pelo vírus. Das 400 amostras de soro analisadas, 69,25% (n = 277) foram reagentes com a detecção de bovinos sorologicamente positivos em 100% (n = 40) das propriedades. Dentre os fatores de risco avaliados, faixa etária entre 3 a 7 anos, ausência de assistência veterinária e sinais respiratórios apresentaram significância estatística (P < 0,05) associada à infecção pelo BoHV-1. Os resultados do estudo indicam que a frequência de anticorpos contra o BoHV-1 foi elevada na região Amazônica maranhense e que os fatores relacionados às características das propriedades e ao manejo foram associados ao risco de infecção pelo BoHV-1.PALAVRAS-CHAVE: BoHV-1, anticorpos, ELISA, vacas leiteiras, odds ratio. ABSTRACT RISK FACTORS FOR BOVINE HERPESVIRUS 1 INFECTION IN CATTLE HERDS IN THE MARANHENSE AMAZON REGION, BRAZIL.This study was performed in order to determine the frequency of Bovine Herpesvirus 1 (BoHV-1), and the main factors related to the frequency of the infection in dairy cows not vaccinated against BoHV-1 from the Maranhense Amazon region, Brazil. Serum samples from 40 ranches were submitted to indirect ELISA test for detection of BoHV-1 antibodies. An epidemiological questionnaire was applied for each herd to investigate variables that could be associated with this infection. From 400 serum samples examined, 69.25% (n = 277) in 100% (n = 40) of the herds were positive for ELISA. Variables identified as risk factors such of age range of 3-7 years, absence of veterinary assistance and respiratory signs presented a statistical significance (P < 0.05) associated to BoHV-1 infection. These results indicate that BoHV-1 infection is high in the region studied and that factors related to characteristics of the ranches and to the livestock management practices were associated with the risk of infection by BoHV-1.

Gastroenteritis caused by viruses is considered to be one of the most important diseases in livestock, being the main cause of morbidity and mortality in young animals, culminating in serious economic losses due to costs with prophylaxis and treatment, increased susceptibility of animals to secondary infections, developmental delay and death. Stressful factors may support the onset of illness. Several viral agents can cause gastroenteritis in various animal species. Rotaviruses are considered the main cause of enteric infections in various animals, including humans constituting important zoonosis. Due to genetic diversity and their ability to cross the species barrier, the coronaviruses infect many species. In cattle, they cause "Winter Dysentery" in adult animals and "Neonatal Diarrhea" in newborn calves. In swine, they are responsible for "Transmissible Gastroenteritis" and "Swine Epidemic Diarrhea." Equines infected with coronavirus also develop severe gastroenteritis. Bovine viral diarrhea (BVD) caused by a flavivirus of the genus Pestivirus is related to digestive and reproductive disorders, affecting any productive sector, are it cut, milk or confinement. Transmission electron microscopy is an indispensable tool in the diagnosis of viral gastroenteric infectious diseases. Negative staining is a simple, fast and efficient technique, being ideal for the detection of gastroenteric viruses, being easily visualized. The immunoelectron microscopy (IEM) technique allows increasing the sensitivity of virus detection where low concentrations of virus are aggregated so that they may be more easily seen. The immunolabeling with colloidal gold technique utilizes specific antibodies tagged with particles of colloidal gold to label the antigen antibody reaction. Embedding resin technique allows obtaining information on the virus-cell interaction. The different transmission electron microscopy modalities promotes a fast and accurate diagnosis of the different gastroenteric viral agents, allowing prophylactic measures of control and prevention in the creations to be promptly instituted, avoiding animal losses and disastrous economic losses, and collaborating with the National Porcine and Bovine Agribusiness.
