Prevention and Treatment of Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia: Contemporary Status and Future Outlook

Abstract: Despite tremendous advances in neonatology, bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) remains a major cause of morbidity and mortality among premature infants. Any intervention that would reduce the risk of BPD or improve its outcome is likely to have substantial clinical and financial benefits. However, there is a clear lack of an effective agent for the treatment and/or prevention of BPD. This is due to an incomplete understanding of the molecular mechanisms involved in its pathogenesis. Taking a basic biological app… Show more

“…It is essentially a disease of prematurity that is caused by a wide variety of proinflammatory factors, including barotrauma, oxotrauma, and infection (3,7,9,15,18). All these agonal insults seem to funnel through the common pathway leading to delayed alveolarization and myofibroblast proliferation (33).…”

“…infants with BPD is reported every year in the United States (10), and accounts for 85% of all preterm complications. Due to lung damage at early developmental stages, these patients suffer with persistent respiratory complications beyond their childhood (11,12).…”
