Prevention of pressure ulcer: interaction of body characteristics and different mattresses

Abstract: We analysed the effect of different body features on contact area, interface pressure and pressure distribution of three different mattresses. Thirty-eight volunteers (age ranged from 17 to 73 years, 23 females) were asked to lie on three different mattresses in a random order: I, standard hospital foam mattresses; II, higher specification foam mattresses (Viscorelax Sure® ); III, constant low pressure devices (CareMedx® , AirSystems). Measurements were performed in supine position and in a 90° left- and right… Show more

“…The results seem to support the observation that different body constitutions affect pressure points in a "one size fits all" bed frame. [22] A further finding was that, RNs, ANs and SNs had similar attitude scores regarding pressure ulcer prevention. [12] However, the average knowledge score for SN6 was 53.6% and for SN2 59.2%.…”

“…The highest recorded pressure before feedback from the CBPM monitor was 95 mm Hg for male 1 with a normal body mass index (BMI) and 76 mm Hg for female 2 with a low BMI. It seems important to be aware of different body constitutions and how they affect pressure points .…”

“…8 Envelopment and immersion are possible with a static air mattress overlay. 4,11,12 The static air mattress overlay is compact and low in weight. It consists of several compartments; the air moves over a large area when a person lies on the mattress.…”
