Prevention of the rise in plasma cholesterol and glucose levels by kaki‐tannin and characterization of its bile acid binding capacity

Abstract: BACKGROUND Bile acid‐binding agents, such as cholestyramine and colesevelam, improve both cholesterol and glucose metabolism. Kaki‐tannin, a polymerized condensed tannin derived from persimmon (Diospyros kaki), has been shown to have bile acid‐binding capacity and a hypocholesterolemic effect. However, its effects on glucose metabolism have not been well studied, and the binding selectivity of kaki‐tannin to bile acid molecules has not been reported. RESULTS In vivo experiments using mice with high‐fat diet‐in… Show more

“…Kaki tannin has the property of binding with bile acids [ 87 ] and the effect of lowering cholesterol and ameliorating glucose metabolism [ 88 , 89 ]. Kaki tannins have also been reported to reshape the gut microbiota in rats fed a high-cholesterol diet [ 90 ].…”

“…Supplementation of natural products may also affect the excretion of LCA. Kaki-tannin (an extract from persimmon) preferentially binds to monohydroxy LCA and promotes its excretion ( Nishida et al, 2021 ). Ethanolic extract of Fructus schisandrae enhances the excretion of BAs to the intestine and feces and restores the structure of intestinal flora that is destroyed by excess LCA ( Li et al, 2020 ).…”

“…Glycyrrhizin and oleanolic are found to accelerate LCA detoxification by up-regulating the expression of detoxification enzymes ( Wang et al, 2012 ; Chai et al, 2015 ). Kaki-tannin increases the fecal excretion of LCA ( Nishida et al, 2021 ). Bufalin enhances the activation of vitamin D receptor (VDR) via LCA binding ( Nakano et al, 2005 ).…”
