Price transmission dynamics for quality‐certified food products: A comparison between conventional and organic fluid milk in Italy

Abstract: Despite the vast number of works investigating price transmission (PT) processes in diverse agrifood markets, very little has been said about quality-differentiated products. In this paper, we compare the conventional and organic fluid milk sectors in Italy to better understand the economic organization and functioning of one of the most important agrifoods in Italy. Using a unique dataset featuring processor and retail (scanner) prices for the two types of milk, we estimate Momentum-Threshold Autoregressive m… Show more

“…First, the body of literature on food commodities designated with a quality label has grown over the years using different approaches: Consumers' perceptions [15][16][17][18], marketing strategies [19,20], power relations between participants [21,22], and implications on the producers' and consumers' wellbeing [23,24]. Second, previous research dealing with price transmission dynamics in a protected supply chain is scarce, and only the authors of [25,26] investigated the vertical transmission of prices in levels along the supply chain for organic milk and PDO Parmigiano Reggiano, respectively, for a recent period after the longstanding global crisis. Both studies provided a comparative analysis of the behavior of price dynamics in levels of the quality-differentiated product and its conventional counterpart.…”

“…By contrast, milk consumption is undergoing an evolution with a growth of so-called green products [67,68]. In general, consumers' interest for organic and local production has grown tremendously [69].…”

“…Cavicchioli [12] and Madau et al [56] studied the buyer power in the supply chain of fresh milk highlighting how market structure affects the upstream and downstream spread of prices. Antonioli et al [57] analysed the differences along quality differentiated chains focusing on conventional and organic milk, finding that the latter chain is more responsive than the conventional one. Again, differences in the structure of the two markets are found to affect price transmission mechanism.…”
