Pride Parades and LGBT Movements

Abstract: Notwithstanding their relevance to the development of collective identities, as well as for the image and narrative of contentious politics, festivals or parades have not received much attention in social movement studies. This volume fills this gap through an in-depth comparative analysis of Pride Parades that uncovers the polyvocal manifestations of LGBT communities in different countries and periods. A brilliant contribution!

“…Pride is widely considered to be the most significant social movement for LGBTQ+ visibility and community building, and the primary platform to campaign for social, political and legal change (Ammaturo, 2016; Browne, 2007; Bruce, 2016; Formby, 2019; Johnston, 2005; Peterson et al, 2018). Initially, and commonly, organised as a parade, Pride has been described as a set of ‘foundational rituals for LGBT movements across the globe’, which ‘act as collective responses to oppression, encourage redefinition of the self, and express collective identity’ (Peterson et al, 2018: 17). Many Prides have expanded from a parade to include after-parties, music festivals, conferences, film festivals and corporate diversity events, and have become major tourist events for their host cities.…”

“…Un último apunte 37 , que enlazará con los restantes apartados (aunque ya indicado), es que las protestas protagonizadas por los "indignados" en España, como las del movimiento Occupy Wall Street, no están protagonizadas por los colectivos más castigados por la crisis. De hecho, son personas con un perfil sociodemográfico no coincidente con lo que se entiende como clase obrera, sino que son personas jóvenes de clase media y alto perfil formativo.…”
