Purpose The global pandemic has had a considerable effect on organisations’ performance and development and on the daily lives of the general population. This study aims to analyse the recent literature on the topics of Covid-19 and sustainability and proposes to rethink and redefine sustainability with the intersection of human health as a fourth sustainable pillar. Design/methodology/approach Using the Scopus and ISI Web of Science databases, 119 articles were analysed in detail and classified according to concepts and principles for achieving sustainable development, based on the Brundtland Report, 1987. Findings The results indicate a high number of publications in the social dimension, with a relevant proportion of studies in the health sector. This study allows us to conclude that all sectors of society are being affected by the pandemic. However, the enormous tension and the immediate impact felt by the health sector during the pandemic reflect directly on the population, and there are clear signs that in the medium and long term, instability and uncertainty in the environmental, economic and social dimensions will remain. In national health systems, monitoring, innovating in human resource management and investing in information technology can ensure organizations’ reliability and sustainability. The conclusion involves the suggestion of introducing health as a new pillar for sustainability to consolidate the basis and structure of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Objectives. The use of fundamental concepts is necessary and must be aligned to reassess the results obtained in studies, in comparison with observational data. Practical implications The implications arising from the inclusion of health as a fourth pillar of sustainability are diverse. The need to build a new theoretical and conceptual framework for sustainability derives from the fact that health reflects the concern of many postulants in this field of practices. The determining or conditioning conditions of the observed effects of the pandemic by COVID-19, whether situated simply as factors and/or economic, environmental or social reflexes that precede them, requires a conceptual development that allows its approach, as a complex object, whose determinations are subject to variable degrees of uncertainty and diversity. Originality/value This study aims to redefine the concept of sustainability, considering that health has become a public health emergency of international interest. Health affects the supply chain, cash flow, interferes with the educational format and interrupts the workforce’s routine, among other aspects, showing the true nature of its importance and its impact in all spheres (economic, environmental and social).

The practice of teleworking has been growing steadily in recent years with the development of ICT and the flexibilisation of work. The Covid‐19 pandemic and its stay‐at‐home restrictions have further accelerated this trend. As teleworking reduces the frequency of commuting, it also reduces CO2 emissions and may be seen as a tool to regulate mobility. However, and especially since working from home enables more flexible working, teleworking may have various ‘rebound‘ effects on daily and residential mobility practices. Rebound effects include possible increases in the frequency or distance of journeys, such as an increase in non‐work‐related travel on teleworking days, as well as effects such as residential relocation or multilocal dwelling. In this article we intend to introduce and categorize the existing literature on the potential rebound effects of teleworking on residential and daily mobility. By critically assessing the literature we have identified the major lessons, while also noticing the limits of the research and a scarcity of qualitative approaches to understand how and why people who telework reinvest their non‐commuting time in other forms of mobility. Also missing in the literature is the longitudinal aspect, that is, the consideration of long‐term changes. These gaps have led us to formulate our proposition of a research agenda, where the lifestyle and life course approaches have emerged as crucial tools to understanding the motivations for teleworking and the respective rebound effects on residential and daily mobility.

Our study presents a systematic literature review on the repercussions of the COVID-19 pandemic on the different types of sharing economy platforms and the sharing economy phenomenon in its entirety. Our literature review helps understand how the characteristics of different services of the sharing economy combine with contingent factors, such as government-mandated lockdowns, changed consumer behaviors, and people’s fear of contagion, to determine the magnitude of the impact of COVID-19 on the sharing economy both in the short run and in the long run. By examining these factors, we distinguish between sharing economy services/platforms that were (and possibly will be) negatively impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic (referred to as “symptomatic” platforms) and those that were not (and possibly will not be) impacted at all or even benefit (referred to as “asymptomatic” platforms). We then propose a new framework that combines traditional dimensions of sharing economy with a dimension resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic, i.e., the level of physical interaction required to deliver the sharing economy service. Building upon the extant literature, the framework helps better understand how the sharing economy will evolve after the pandemic. It also helps identify important research gaps that both academics and practitioners working on the field of sharing economy should address in the near future.
