“…There appears to be considerable variation in the severity of the illness, and in some published series most of the cases were mild. Thus Campbell et al (1943), while reporting one death in 200 cases, say that on the whole they were mild with infrequent complications, and among 75 cases occurring in a college Contratto (1943) reports that none was serious. It can readily be believed that the milder cases occurring sporadically may have gone unrecognized, but it is not so easy to see how, in its more acute manifestations, the disease could have passed the notice of clinical and radiological scrutiny, especially when encountered in an epidemic form.…”
