Primary Carcinoid Tumor of the Testis With Metastasis to the Upper Vertebrae

Abstract: A case of primary carcinoid tumor of the right testis with metastases to the cervical and thoracic vertebrae and epidural is reported. A 53-year-old man was first recognized as being with dysthesia of the left arm and shoulder in April 1986. In June, 1987, he was admitted to the Neurology service, complaining of sudden occurrence of abasia. Myelography and computerized tomography demonstrated an epidural mass and several high density areas in the vertebral bodies of Th1 and Th2. The patient underwent laminecto… Show more

“…carcinoid heart disease, and metastatic patterns such as skin and skeletal metastases, have been discovered. These complications were described in two more recent cases of testicular carcinoid [29,32]. One case report mentioned a metastasis to the heart [32] and autopsy showed nests of tumour cells in the endocardium.…”

“…Metastases were described in seven of the 44 cases in group 1 [8,9,15,28,29,32]. The sites of these metastases were liver in two and one each in the lung, cervical and thoracic vertebrae, and the abdominal wall; one patient developed metastases in the heart, lung and skin, and another developed them in the contralateral testicle and lymph nodes.…”

“…Because of improved prognosis and longer survival time due to advanced diagnostic and therapeutic techniques other late complications involving metastasis to skin and skeletal system and carcinoid heart disease (CHD) are reported [20,21]. Long term follow up is recommended since delayed metastasis has been reported even up to several years with one case of metastasis occurring after 17 years of initial diagnosis [8].…”

“…Wang et al reported metastases in none of 20 typical primary testicular cases and in 1 of 4 cases with atypical morphology [3]. Documented sites of metastases include the para-aortic lymph nodes, lungs, vertebrae, retroperitoneum, skin and skeletal muscle [17][18][19][20].…”
