Primary cardiac angiosarcoma: a prolonged response to surgical resection followed by concurrent chemoradiotherapy with docetaxel

Abstract: IntroductionPrimary cardiac cancer is a very rare disease, among which primary cardiac angiosarcoma is one of the most frequent type and is characterized by extremely poor prognosis without established optimal treatment.Case descriptionHere we report a case of primary cardiac angiosarcoma with hemorrhagic pericardial effusion who achieved a durable response with tumor excision followed by concurrent chemoradiotherapy with docetaxel. A sixty year old man was presented with dyspnea and was diagnosed with primary… Show more

“…Primary cardiac angiosarcomas have a poor prognosis with median survival rates ranging from 6 to 11 months ( 11 ). Survival after surgical intervention has a median of 14 months ( 11 ), while with systemic metastasis has only 3.8 ± 2.5 months' difference without surgical resection ( 12 ). Surgery is a commonly chosen therapy, particularly in the setting of localized disease, in that it seems to provide the best option for palliative care and potential cure ( 13 ).…”

“…[ 28 , 29 ] Recent studies showed that docetaxel has similar efficacy for metastatic angiosarcomas. [ 26 , 30 , 31 ] Gemcitabine was also effective for treating advanced angiosarcoma. [ 29 , 32 ] Moreover, the successful administration of molecular targeted therapy in some tumors indicated that it may have possible therapeutic benefit in angiosarcoma as well.…”

“…[ 20 ] Although, this case responds poorly to chemotherapy and targeted therapy, some of limited cases, after radical resection, a multidisciplinary approach with adjuvant chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and targeted therapy may improve overall survival even reaching 33 months. [ 21 23 ]…”
