Primary Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis of the Vulva

Abstract: Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) of the female genital tract is very rare. A review of the literature revealed that only 12 cases of primary vulvar LCH have previously been published. We describe an additional case of LCH in which the disease was confined to the vulva. A 64-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital with a nodular mass on her left labium minus, and complete surgical excision was performed. On histological and immunohistochemical examination, the tumor fulfilled the criteria of LCH. A metas… Show more

“…The clinical manifestations in such cases can be diverse, but in most patients take the form of ulcers or erythematous plaques on the vulva and/or vagina. Vulva and/or vaginal LCH lesions should be differentiated from other dermatologic disorders: eczema, genital tuberculosis, and sexually transmitted disease, as well as a number of neoplastic processes: squamous cell carcinoma, malignant melanoma, sarcoma, and Paget's disease of the vulva (20).…”

“…8 There have been only 19 case reports of primary isolated vulval adult LCH with the youngest affected patient being 16.5 years old as summarized in Table 3. [1][2][3][6][7][8][9]11,15,16,[19][20][21][22][23] Vulval ulcers are the most common presentation of genital LCH. 10 Genital LCH can also present as erythematous plaques, papules or nodules.…”

[4][5][6][7][8]14,15 The clinical course in adults is usually benign and men are predominantly affected. 3,16 Langerhans cell histiocytosis is a monoclonal proliferation of cells which share characteristics of Langerhans cells.…”
