Primary paraganglioma located between the thyroid gland and the left common carotid artery: A case report

Abstract: Head and neck paraganglioma is a rare and predominantly asymptomatic tumor. In the present study, an extremely rare case of asymptomatic paraganglioma located between the left common carotid artery and the left thyroid is described. The clinical presentation, cytomorphology and the immunohistochemical characteristics for the diagnosis of head and neck paraganglioma are described. To the best of our knowledge, only two cases of paraganglioma located between the left common carotid artery and the left thyroid ha… Show more

“…These tumors are categorized as symptomatic or asymptomatic based on whether endogenous catecholamine hormone excretion is elaborated. CT, CT angiography, MRI, and PET/CT have been found useful for the diagnosis of the disease [ 1 , 2 ]. Specifically, Ga-labelled somatostatin agonist PET is favored regardless of the patient's genetic background [ 13 ].…”

“…Atualmente não há evidências histológicas para distinguir os paragangliomas entre benignos e malignos, porém algumas características têm sido usadas para prever uma possível malignidade, como a invasão vascular e a ausência do marcador imunohistoquímico S-100 5,12 . Características estas encontradas no caso clínico apresentado.…”
