Primary Prevention of Pediatric Asthma through Nutritional Interventions

Abstract: Asthma is the most common chronic non-communicable disease in children, the pathogenesis of which involves several factors. The increasing burden of asthma worldwide has emphasized the need to identify the modifiable factors associated with the development of the disease. Recent research has focused on the relationship between dietary factors during the first 1000 days of life (including pregnancy)—when the immune system is particularly vulnerable to exogenous interferences—and allergic outcomes in children. S… Show more

“…There is growing evidence that sustained improvements in early life and adult pre-pregnancy nutrition could improve birth outcomes in offspring, [7] and vitamin D and omega-3 fatty acid supplementation during pregnancy may be protective against early childhood wheezing. [8] As a major early example of nutrition care for selected nutrient deficiencies, since vitamin D was first described almost a century ago, vitamin D preparations have been successfully used as a public health intervention to prevent nutritional rickets. [9] In the context of metabolic disorders, numerous diseases caused by abnormalities in nutritional metabolism can be cured by nutrition care and a special medical diet.…”

“…In the present study, we utilized the UK Biobank data to investigate the effect of breastfeeding on asthma in children under 12 years of age. It needs to first highlight that limiting the age of onset of asthma less than 12 years old is mainly because that asthma is the most common chronic non-communicable disease in pediatrics, affecting 5-10% of school-age children and adolescents ( 18 ), and that the protective effect of breastfeeding on asthma might be strongest in early childhood ( 19 , 20 ). Previous studies detected the relationship between breastfeeding and asthma risk across distinct age groups from 2 months to 18 years, resulting in the likelihood that other exposures influencing this association increased with age ( 21 ).…”

(Evans et al, 2006;Hart et al, 2015;Wang et al, 2020)…”
