“…Portal vein patency, diameter, flow direction, portal blood velocity, portal congestion index, spleen diameter, and pattern of hepatic vein flow were assessed as previously described in detail [19]. Moreover, the presence and the number of porto-systemic collateral routes were specifically explored in all patients according to the protocol of US study for cirrhotic patients published by the Italian Association for the Study of the Liver [19,20].…”

“…There is currently no room for performing US-Doppler monitoring of HVPG response to medical therapy of portal hypertension, since changes of Doppler parameters do not accurately reflect changes in HVPG [66]. However, in a recent study, CDUS pattern at baseline was shown to be different, showing a greater baseline splanchnic vasodilatation (as indicated by a low pulsatility and resistance index in splenic, mesenteric and hepatic artery) in HVPG non-responders than in responders after chronic nadolol treatment [67], and overall the high negative predictive value of Doppler parameters may help to detect non-responders.…”

“…Data in the literature are scanty and conflicting on the role of DDUS to evaluate the chronic effect of beta blockers on the portal pressure in cirrhotics with portal hypertension (Table 5) [28,38,62,63]. The variability in results is due to factors such as the etiology of cirrhosis, the stage of liver disease, presence of absence of prior variceal bleeding, lack of information on concurrent medications and/or comorbidities, medication used and its dose, and the indices assessed i.e.…”
