Primary signet-ring cell carcinoma of the extrahepatic bile duct: A case report

Abstract: BACKGROUND Signet ring cell carcinoma (SRCC) is a specific type of mucinous secretory adenocarcinoma, which contains abundant mucus in the cytoplasm and pushes the nucleus to one side of the cell membrane, forming a round or oval, and the nuclear deviations give the cells a signet ring-like appearance. SRCC often originates in the gastrointestinal tract, especially in the stomach. However, primary SRCC of the extrahepatic bile duct is extremely rare. Therefore, little is known about its epidemiolo… Show more

“…Previous studies also described two separable types containing intestinal type and pancreatobiliary type with CK7 negative plus CK20/MUC2 positive and CK7 positive plus CK20/MUC2 negative, respectively (146,147). That signet ring cell carcinoma of eCCA with distant lymph node metastasis has also been noticed recently (145). Distant metastases always lead to a poor prognosis in eCCA patients.…”

“…Signet ring cell carcinoma is characterized by abundant mucus in the cytoplasm extruding nucleus from center to margin of cell. Generally, a few cases with signet ring cell carcinoma of eCCA were reported up to now ( 145 ). Previous studies also described two separable types containing intestinal type and pancreatobiliary type with CK7 negative plus CK20/MUC2 positive and CK7 positive plus CK20/MUC2 negative, respectively ( 146 , 147 ).…”

“…Signet ring cell carcinoma (SRCC) is a rare subtype of CCA with predominantly or exclusively signet ring cells (>50% of the tumor cells), similar to signet ring cell carcinomas at other sites. SRCCs arising from the intrahepatic bile duct are extremely rare [106,107], and SRCCs originating from the hilar and distal bile ducts have also been reported [108][109][110]. The prognosis of patients with SRCCs arising in the gastrointestinal tract is generally worse than that of patients with adenocarcinoma, NOS, and mucinous carcinomas.…”
