Primary Treatment and Prognostic Factors of Carcinosarcoma of the Ovary, Fallopian Tube, and Peritoneum

Abstract: Early diagnosis at stage I, unilateral ovarian tumor, metastatic tumors less than 2 cm, and cisplatin/ifosfamide regimen were predictive of a better survival.Omentectomy and complete debulking surgery also showed a trend toward better survival. Thus, these treatment strategies should be applied in patients with carcinosarcoma of the ovary, fallopian tube, and peritoneum.

“…[98][99][100] However, in view of the paucity of studies, the ICCR recommends that it would be useful to record the percentage of the epithelial and mesenchymal elements as well as the subtypes of the epithelial and mesenchymal components. However, the panel recognises that on occasions it may be difficult or even impossible to classify the epithelial and mesenchymal subtypes given that overlapping and mixed patterns not infrequently occur in this tumour type.…”

“…This is a recommended rather than a required element and collection of these data may be informative for the future regarding the prognosis and management of these neoplasms. [98][99][100] Tumour grade Mucinous carcinoma. There is also little evidence for grading mucinous carcinomas, although oncologists often ask for a tumour grade.…”

“…Some reviews have been published on the primary treatment and prognostic factors of Müllerian carcinosarcomas ( 9 , 10 ). Based on these reviews, platinum-based chemotherapy is the mainstay of adjuvant systemic treatment, and the addition of paclitaxel or ifosfamide to platinum is recommended as first-line treatment.…”

“…Bilateral ovarian tumours and metastatic tumours larger than 2cms were significantly associated with a poorer overall survival. 8 Regarding our case, the factors which contributed for the good prognosis were early stage disease, unilateral ovarian tumour, no pelvic lymph node metastasis, omentectomy, no residual implants after surgery and platinum based treatment.…”
