Prior degree and academic performance in medical school: evidence for prioritising health students and moving away from a bio-medical science-focused entry stream

Abstract: Background Given the importance of the selection process, many medical schools are reviewing their selection criteria. The traditional pathway for post-graduate medicine has been from science-based undergraduate degrees, however some programs are expanding their criteria. In this study we investigated academic success across all years and themes of the Deakin University medical degree, based on the type of degree undertaken prior to admission. We evaluated whether the traditional pathway of bio… Show more

“…Data were assessed for normality using Shapiro-Wilks tests. Patients were compared between groups with one-way ANOVA, with least significant difference post hoc analysis correcting for multiple comparisons [25] of age, time since stroke, education years, FMA-UE scores, and WMFT scores. Means and standard deviations were reported.…”

“…In addition, modeling behaviors by near peers (e.g., senior residents showing junior residents how they incorporate SBP into their daily work) is an important tool in ensuring the sustainability of any education reform effort, particularly in the area of SBP. Trainees may even be positioned to support SBP learning among their peers, given that an increasing number of trainees enter medical school and residency with prior training in business, the social sciences, or engineering, disciplines that are relevant to SBP 44 . There are several possible avenues for learners to engage in peer-led activities.…”

At the institutional level, there is a long history of student-led campaigns, clinics, and other initiatives that focus on areas within SBP, often through an advocacy lens.…”
