Priority Areas for Forest Conservation in an Urban Landscape at the Transition Between Atlantic Forest and Cerrado

Abstract: Urbanization and agriculture growth are some of the major causes of natural ecosystems depletion and biodiversity loss. Conservation efforts can be developed through the prioritization of areas for forest conservation in order to minimize this process. Here, we establish conservation strategies based on a spatial analysis of forest fragments in an urban landscape at the transition between two important Brazilian biodiversity hotspots: Atlantic Forest and Cerrado. A high-resolution mapping of forest patches was… Show more

“…The edge-dominated Atlantic forest fragments move towards early-successional systems, compromising the forest fragment sustainability (Joly et al, 2014). However, large forest fragments in highly fragmented landscapes tend to have more irregular shape than small patches (Mello et al, 2016). (c) ENN: this indicates the distance of the nearest neighbor related to the degree of isolation of the forest fragments (McGarigal, 2015).…”

“…The combination of various landscape metrics can be used to build important indexes which are currently applied for defining priority areas for forest conservation and restoration (Bortoleto et al, 2016;Mello, Toppa, & Cardoso-Leite, 2016;Valente & Vettorazzi, 2008;Vettorazzi & Valente, 2016). Mello et al (2016) and Bortoleto et al (2016) developed indexes for priority areas for forest conservation and restoration, respectively, in the same area in Southern Brazil, while Vettorazzi and Valente (2016) used several landscape criteria to identify priority areas for forest restoration aiming toward water resource conservation. Moreover, selected potential forest fragments for seed harvesting based on landscape metrics.…”
